Textile Transformations: From a Social Distance 

Take part in a participatory fiber arts project while staying with your pod!

Artist Janice Patrignani will provide materials and Zoom tutorials about the fiber arts Techniques of natural Echo Printing and Dying. To participate you will pick up a materials packet, then go for a short walk in search of leaves. Trace the leaves onto a cotton cloth with fabric markers. Pack up all the leaves that you traced and put all the supplies back into the packet, return it to the Greenbelt Nature Center, and receive a follow-up Zoom and an invitation to pick up your textiles “transformed”. 

Materials pick-up and drop-off accepted outside the Greenbelt Nature Center from 10am-3pm on 8/27, 8/28/ and 8/29. 

This project funded in part by a DCA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts with public funding from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Free. Recommended for ages 6+.

Ceramic Form & Function for Adults

Explore the transformational qualities of clay by experimenting with form, volume, and surface. This class is designed with the beginner in mind but is also appropriate for the more experienced artist. Instruction in handbuilding and/or wheel throwing techniques will be offered. Have fun creating unique handmade sculptures, vessels, or pots and decorating them using a variety of ornamental techniques. Bring a friend along for double the fun!

Clay Odyssey

Express oneself three-dimensionally by exploring the world of clay this summer.  Embark on a creative and artistic journey through the hand-building techniques of pinch, coil, and slab, plus surface decoration and glazing basics. Most exciting are the projects campers will create that will spark individual expression by transforming clay into both functional objects and fanciful clay sculptures. Projects are fired at Wagner College in one of the few kilns available on Staten Island. No previous experience with clay required.

Escapades in Art

Participants will spark their imaginations as we journey through creative and artistic adventures experimenting with several types of art materials, processes, mediums and techniques. Projects may include watercolor and silk painting, sculpture, paper making and marbling, bookmaking, mask making and mosaic art. This class will revolve around each young artist’s individual creative expressions.  By the end of the week, your young artist will have created a wonderful collection of amazing artworks!
